L' impossibilité logique, physique ou "morale" est exprimée par cannot + infinitif:
I wonder who called. It cannot be Smith. He is on holiday. Je me demande qui a téléphoné. Ça ne peut pas être Smith. Il est parti en vacances. It can’t be true : I have plenty of evidence to the contrary. Il n’est pas possible que ce soit vrai : j’ai plein de preuves du contraire. He cannot be the man we’re looking for. Il n’est pas possible que ce soit l’homme que nous recherchons. I'm afraid I cannot be there before eleven. It's too far for me. Je crains bien que je ne pourrai pas y être avant onze heures. C'est trop loin pour moi. You cannot enter without my permission. Tu ne peux pas entrer sans mon autorisation.
