Want ("vouloir") permet plusieurs formes de complémentation :

S + want + objet direct nominal

I want a drink.
Je veux une boisson.

The house wants a coat of paint.
La maison a besoin d'un coup de peinture.

S + want + objet direct + complément de l'objet (adjectif)

I want this letter ready before noon.
Je veux que cette lettre soit prête avant midi.

They want him alive or dead.
Ils le veulent mort ou vif.

S + want + objet direct + groupe prépositionnel

We want him for president.
Nous le voulons comme président.

He is wanted for murder.
Il est recherché pour meurtre.

S + want + to + infinitif

I want to pee.
J'ai besoin de faire pipi.

Do you want to go to heaven?
Veux-tu aller au ciel?

You want to see a doctor.
Tu veux (ferais bien de) voir un médecin.

S + want + objet direct + to + infinitif

Le verbe want ne peut pas être suivi d'une subordonnée finie (= à verbe conjugué) introduite par that, au contraire des autres langues (dat, daß, che, que). La structure Sujet + Verbe + Objet + to + Infinitif est obligatoire.

I want you to love me.

de: Ich will daß du mich liebst.
es: Quiero que (tu) mi ames.
fr: Je veux que tu m'aimes.
it: Voglio che (tu) mi ami.
nl: Ik wil dat je van me houdt.

en: I want that you love me.

S + want + participe présent

This job wants doing at once.
Ce boulot a besoin d'être fait tout de suite.

S + want + objet direct + participe présent

She does not want people walking in and out all day.
Elle ne veut pas que des gens entrent et sortent constamment toute la journée.

I want you all working when I come back.
Je veux que vous soyez tous en train de travailler lorsque je reviens.

S + want + gérondif

The document wants some more streamlining before it can be submitted.
Le document a besoin d'être encore allégé un peu avant de pouvoir être soumis.

S + want + objet direct + participe passé

She wants her hair cut short and dyed red.
Elle veut que ses cheveux soient coupés courts et teints en rouge.

I want this project finished before the week-end.
Je veux que ce projet soit terminé avant le week-end.

S + want + particule adverbiale

The cat wants in / out.
Le chat veut entrer / sortir.

S + want (à la forme progressive)

He supplied the information which had been wanting.
Il apporta l'information qui avait fait défaut.

His leadership was (found to be) badly wanting.
(Il s'avéra que) ses capacités de chef firent cruellement défaut.

S + want (à la forme progressive) + groupe prépositionnel

The children are not wanting for anything.
Les enfants ne manquent de rien.

He was not wanting in ambition to control everything.
Il ne manquait pas d'ambition à tout contrôler.
