Verbe intransitif

On appelle intransitifs les verbes qui se construisent sans objet (direct ou indirect). On distingue les verbes intransitifs:

S + Verbe Intransitif

We are moving.
Nous déménageons.

The train arrived.
Le train arriva.

I don’t care, it does not matter.
Je m’en fiche, ça n’a pas d’importance.

S + Verbe Copule + Attribut/Complément

She is and remains an excellent manager.
Elle est et reste une excellente directrice.

That must cost a pretty penny !
Ça doit valoir une coquette petite somme !

It weighs about a ton !
Ça pèse près d’une tonne !

S + Verbe intransitif + Complément circonstanciel obligatoire

She resides abroad.
Elle réside à l’étranger.

He is here , but he does not belong among us.
Il est (vit, habite) ici, mais sa place n’est pas parmi nous.


Notes

Actif à signification passive

  • L’anglais peut employer intransitivement un verbe transitif actif avec une signification passive, là où le français se sert d’un verbe pronominal :
The book sells well, and is now reprinting.
Le livre se vend bien, et est actuellement en réimpression.

Emploi Ergatif

He opened the door => The door opened. 
Il ouvrit la porte => La porte s'ouvrit.

The management has closed the factory => The factory has closed.
La direction a fermé l'usaine => L'usine a fermé.

The government has increased taxes => Taxes have increased.
Le gouvernement a augmenté les impôts => Les impôts ont augmenté.
