La façon dont le verbe reflète le temps peut être comprise de deux façons :

Le "temps-quand" a trait au moment où l’action se déroule par rapport au moment où l’on énonce la phrase : le temps présent, le temps passé, (=> ENG 567) le temps futur (=> ENG 568) et le temps indépendant du moment de l’action, l’événement ou l’état. Le moment de l’action détermine la forme que prendra le groupe verbal. Le temps peut être indiqué par des adverbes ou adverbiaux de temps, ou par le contexte.

L’aspect ou "temps-comment" exprime des relations dans le temps (durée, répétition, habitude, ...) qui ne se définissent pas par rapport à un moment précis. L’aspect peut être indiqué par des adverbes ou adverbiaux (compléments circonstanciels, mais aussi par le choix lexical (sit down = “s’asseoir” indique le début d’un état, drink up = “tout boire, vider son verre” le résultat final d’une action, hit = “frapper” une action ponctuelle, batter = “rouer de coups” une action répétée, etc.).

Dans la forme verbale, on distingue l’aspect progressif, l’aspect perfectif, l’aspect progressif-perfectif, et l’aspect simple, qui est ni l’un ni l’autre.
