Les formes du passif

La forme passive du verbe se compose du verbe to be (ou, plus rarement to get, voir ci-dessous) à la personne, au temps et à l'aspect voulus, suivi du participe passé :

Nous peignons tous nos murs en vert. Tous nos murs sont peints en vert.
 
PRÉSENT PROGRESSIF: PRÉSENT PROGRESSIF:
He is painting the wall. The wall is being painted.
Il est en train de peindre le mur. Le mur est en train d'être peint.
 
PRÉTÉRIT SIMPLE: PRÉTÉRIT SIMPLE:
He painted the wall in 1970. The wall was painted in 1970.
Il peignit / a peint le mur en 1970. Le mur fut / a été peint en 1970.
 
PRÉTÉRIT PROGRESSIF: PRÉTÉRIT PROGRESSIF:
He was painting the wall. The wall was being painted.
Il était en train de peindre le mur. Le mur était en train d'être peint.
 
PRÉSENT-PASSÉ: PRÉSENT-PASSÉ:
We have painted all the walls. All the walls have been painted.
Nous avons peint tous les murs. Tous les murs ont été peints.
 
PRESENT-PASSÉ PROGRESSIF: PRESENT-PASSÉ PROGRESSIF:
We have been considering the question. The question has already been being considered.
Nous avons déjà étudié la question. La question a déjà été soumise à l'étude.
 
PLUS-QUE-PARFAIT: PLUS-QUE-PARFAIT:
We had painted the wall. The wall had been painted.
Nous avions peint le mur. Le mur avait été peint.  
 
PLUS-QUE-PARFAIT PROGRESSIF: PLUS-QUE-PARFAIT PROGRESSIF:
We had been following the suspects. The suspects had already been being followed.
Nous avions (déjà) suivi les suspects. Les suspects avaient déjà été suivis (depuis un bout de temps).
 
FUTUR SIMPLE: FUTUR SIMPLE:
We shall soon make changes. Changes will soon be made.
Nous ferons bientôt des changements. Des changements seront bientôt entrepris.  
 
FUTUR SIMPLE PROGRESSIF: FUTUR SIMPLE PROGRESSIF:
We shall soon be making changes. Changes will soon be being made.
Nous ferons bientôt des changements. Des changements seront bientôt en cours d'exécution.  
 
FUTUR ANTÉRIEUR: FUTUR ANTÉRIEUR:
He will soon have painted all the walls. All the walls will soon have been painted.
Il aura bientôt peint tous les murs. Tous les murs auront bientôt été peints.
 
CONDITIONNEL PRÉSENT: CONDITIONNEL PRÉSENT:
I would paint the wall if ... The wall would be painted if ...
Je peindrais le mur si ... Le mur serait peint si ...
 
CONDITIONNEL PASSÉ: CONDITIONNEL PASSÉ:

J'aurais peint le mur si ... Le mur aurait été peint si ...
 
SUBJONCTIF: SUBJONCTIF:
... that he (should) paint the wall. ... that the wall (should) be painted.
...qu'il peigne le mur ...que le mur soit peint
 
INFINITIF APRÈS AUXILIAIRE: INFINITIF APRÈS AUXILIAIRE:
Someone must paint this wall. This wall must be painted.
Quelqu'un doit peindre ce mur. Ce mur doit être peint.  


Formes passives avec get

Dans la formation du passif, l'auxiliaire be peut être remplacé, dans un emploi moins formel, par get, verbe irrégulier (got, got(ten)) qui se conjugue comme un verbe ordinaire, c-à-d. avec les auxiliaires-opérateurs do ou have.

Le passif avec get met davantage l'accent sur le processus que sur le résultat :

The family is finally getting settled.
La famille finit enfin par s'installer.

The children got bitten by hundreds of mosquitoes.
Les enfants se firent piquer par des centaines de moustiques.

Did their things get lost during the war ?
Leurs affaires se sont-elles perdues pendant la guerre ?.

Have you got(ten) injured ?
As-tu été blessé ?
