Les adverbes interrogatifs tels que Where, when, how, why, etc. portent sur une circonstance. Ils peuvent se trouver en début de phrase interrogative, mais n’en sont pas le sujet :
Where are they going ? Où vont-ils ? How did you manage ? Comment t’es-tu débrouillé ? Why have they left ? Pourquoi sont-ils partis ? How long will you be staying ? Pendant combien de temps comptez-vous rester ?
Dans les questions indirectes, ils servent de conjonction :
I wonder why the government allows such things to happen. Je me demande pourquoi le gouvernement permet que de pareilles choses arrivent. They came to ask where to find him. Ils vinrent demander où le trouver. She wanted to know how to get to the station. Elle voulait savoir comment arriver à la gare.
