Prépositions

La préposition est un mot invariable qui a une fonction de "charnière", c-à-d. relie un élément de la phrase à un autre. Elle forme avec les éléments qui la suivent un ensemble très cohérent, le groupe prépositionnel.

Fonction

Dans sa fonction de charnière, la préposition relie :

• Les compléments circonstanciels au verbe :

The plane landed in the snow which had fallen during the night.
L'avion atterit dans la neige qui était tombée pendant la nuit.

• L'objet indirect au verbe :

He handed in his resignation to the manager.
Il remit sa démission au directeur.

He bought a diamond ring for his fiancée.
Il acheta une bague à diamant pour sa fiancée.

• Le complément d'agent au verbe passif :

This original poster was designed by a schoolgirl.
Cette affiche originale a été créée par une écolière.

• Un complément déterminatif au nom :

A slice of bread;  The girl with the white top hat; Tea for two.
Une tranche de pain; La fille au haut-de-forme blanc; Du thé pour deux.

• Un complément d'adjectif :

Proud of his origins; Ready for use; Frightened by noise.
Fier de ses origines; Prêt à l'emploi; Effrayé par le bruit.
