Appear peut être un verbe intransitif qui signifie "(ap)paraître":

The sun appeared above the horizon.
Le soleil apparut au-dessus de l'horizon.

The puppet's head appeared, disappeared, and appeared again.
La tête de la marionette apparut, disparut, puis apparut à nouveau.

Mais plus fréquemment, appear est employé come verbe copule (= "sembler, paraître"), suivi d'un adjectif ou to be + un nom ou un infinitif :

He appears (to be) dissatisfied with the product.
Il a l'air insatisfait du produit.

The blast appears to have been timed to coincide with the president's visit.
L'explosion semble avoir été calculée pour coincider avec la visite du président.

Eventually, the offer appeared to be a hoax.
En fin de compte, l'offre s'avéra être une arnaque.

The baby-sitter appeared to be an elderly lady.
La baby-sitter se trouva être une dame âgée.
