Anglais / Néerlandais

• L'anglais as well as, contrairement au néerlandais zowel ... als, n'est pas séparable.
• Il ne faut pas confondre l'anglais become (= "devenir") avec le néerlandais bekomen, qui signifie "obtenir".
• Choix de la forme verbale: l'anglais n'emploie pas la forme conditionnelle/subjonctive dans la proposition subordonnée If ... exprimant une condition hypothétique.
• Pour exprimer un futur correspondant à un plan fixé ou adopté le néerlandais peut employer un présent simple. L'anglais requiert un présent progressif.
• Goed en néerlandais peut être adjectif et adverbe. En anglais, l'adverbe correspondant à l'adjectif good est well.

Ze zingt echt goed.
She sings really well (good).

• Interrogation : L'anglais ne permet pas la structure "Wat betekent dit woord ?" => What means this word ?.
• Pour marquer le pluriel de noms se terminant par une voyelle longue, le néerlandais emploie une apostrophe avant le marqueur s ("piano's"). L'anglais n'emploie pas l'apostrophe + s comme marqueur du pluriel.
• Présent-passé et Voltooid tegenwoordige tijd: Le présent-passé anglais (= have + participe passé) ressemble superficiellement au Voltooid tegenwoordige tijd néerlandais, mais il faut éviter d'assimiler les deux.

Ik heb de auto gisteren gewassen.
I have washed the car yesterday.

• En anglais, le participe correspondant à une relative elliptique suit le nom, alors qu'en néerlandais, il précède généralement :

De door ons gelezen boeken, de in de club ontmoete mensen, de op de markt gekochte groenten, ...
The by us read books, the in the club met people, the on the market bought vegetables, ...
=> The books read by us, the people met in the club, the vegetables bought at the market, ...

• L'anglais Thus n'est pas l'équivalent du néerlandais Dus et Therefore n'est pas l'équivalent de daarvoor.

I am really too busy; so (therefore,) thus I cannot participate in the parade.
Ik heb het echt te druk; dus ik kan niet aan de optocht deelnemen / daarom kan ik niet aan de optocht deelnemen.

Ik loop niet mee in de marathon. Daarvoor ben ik te oud. .
I am not running the marathon.  I am too old  for that (therefore).

• En anglais, le verbe want ne peut pas être complémenté par une subordonnée finie introduite par that.

Ik wil dat je met ons meekomt.
I want you to come along with us.

• L'anglais well n'est pas l'équivalent du néerlandais wel dans les affirmations contradictoires ("ik wel", "dat weet je wel").
• En néerlandais, le pronom relatif wat peut se rapporter à une phrase entière. Dans cette position, l'anglais n'emploie pas what mais which; mais comme le Wat néerlandais, l'anglais What peut introduire une proposition relative sans antécédent.

Hij was al eerder getrouwd geweest, wat ik niet wist.
He had been married before, which I didn't know (what I didn't know.)

Wat je daar doet gaat niemand aan.
What you're doing there is nobody's business.

• Les relatifs adverbiaux en where- ("wherein, whereon, ...) sont plus formels et plus rares en anglais qu'en néerlandais ("waarin, waarop", ...).
