Nothing but est employé, souvent assez péjorativement, pour signifier "rien (d'autre) que":
He is nothing but a minor character in the play. Il n'est guère qu'un petit personnage dans la pièce. All his years of work were rewarded by nothing but a box of chocolates. Il ne fut récompensé pour toutes ses années de travail que par une boîte de chocolats. Don't panic. It's nothing but an eel, and not a snake. Ne panique pas: ce n'est qu'une anguille, et pas un serpent.
Note : Il importe de ne pas confondre nothing but, Anything but et everything but et All but.
