Questions partielles
Les questions « partielles » portent sur un sujet ou un complément. Elles commencent par un mot interrogatif et se terminent par un point d'interrogation. On distingue les pronoms interrogatifs et les adverbes interrogatifs:
Pronoms interrogatifs
Les pronoms interrogatifs sont :
Who (Whom, Whose) ? What ? Which ?
On emploie Who pour une personne, What pour une chose :
Who killed the cat ? Qui a tué le chat ? What did you find ? Qu'as-tu trouvé ?
On emploie Which plutôt que What lorsque la question a trait à un choix :
What are you doing there ? Que fais-tu là ? Which bus goes to the zoo ? Quel bus va au jardin zoologique ?
Accord Sujet / Verbe
Who, What et Which sujet peuvent prendre un verbe au singulier ou au pluriel :
Who is the boss here ? Qui est le chef ici ? Who are the winners ? Qui sont les gagnants ? What is your problem ? Quel est ton problème ? What are the best solutions ? Quelles sont les meilleures solutions ?
Adverbes interrogatifs
Les adverbes interrogatifs tels que Where, when, how, why, etc. portent sur une circonstance. Ils se trouvent en début de phrase, mais n'en sont pas le sujet :
Where are they going ? Où vont-ils ? How did you manage ? Comment t'es-tu débrouillé ? Why have they left ? Pourquoi sont-ils partis ?
How
How + adjectif est le plus souvent suivi de to be, ou d'un verbe dynamique et porte sur un complément du sujet:
How large is the school ? Quelle est la taille de l'école ? How tall do you stand ? Combien mesures-tu ? How much fatter will you grow ? Combien grossiras-tu encore ?
How employé seul ou suivi d'un adverbe porte sur une circonstance:
How are you ? Comment vas-tu ? How can I get to the station ? Comment puis-je arriver à la gare ? How fast can you run ? A quelle vitesse peux-tu courir ? How often did you do that ? Combien de fois as-tu fait cela ? How long will you be staying ? Pendant combien de temps comptez-vous rester ?
How se combine avec much / many pour obtenir l'interrogatif ou exclamatif "combien" :
How much time can you spare me ? Combien de temps peux-tu me consacrer ? How many times must I tell you before you understand ? Combien de fois dois-je te le dire avant que tu ne comprennes ?
Syntaxe
La grammaire de la question partielle varie selon que le mot interrogatif est sujet ou non, et selon le type de groupe verbal (simple ou complexe, avec ou sans auxiliaire, avec ou sans préposition). Voir: Question partielle: syntaxe
Intonation
En général, les questions partielles sont produites avec une intonation descendante.
